CSI Successfully Completes Phase II Experimentation of CALBT

Cougaar Software, Inc. (CSI), an innovative technology company in the Washington DC area specializing in AI and distributed intelligent agent solutions, is pleased to announce the successful completion of recent testing of the Configured Airlift Load Building Tool (CALBT) in the 436th Aerial Port Squadron at Dover Air Force Base for of a Phase II SBIR with the US Air Force.

CALBT is being developed as part of the “Aerial Port of the Future” initiative. The purpose of the Phase II effort is to develop an automated system to assist the Air Mobility Command (AMC) in their efforts to load cargo on 463L pallets in a manner that improves the efficiency of aerial port cargo operations. The envisioned system will take the diverse set of air cargo elements – pallets, containers, and nonstandard packages; a set of conveyance options – containers, pallets, boxes, aircraft cargo areas; pallet configurations; and a set of operator specified preferences or priorities and produce optimal loading configurations using CSI’s load planning technologies, artificial intelligence algorithms for spatial reasoning, as well as several advanced planning technologies.

The trip’s focus was to test various aspects of the application and the overall workflow for the pallet building process. The tests conducted while utilizing CALBT used actual cargo delivered by trucks and unloaded at the docks. Testing included evaluating the speed and accuracy of the system and determining the number of touchpoints utilizing the application. Overall, the application shows potential for automating and improving the pallet building process, including achieving 80% to 90% pallet space utilization.
