Sense & Respond Logistics:
CSI Overview / Vision

Sense and Respond as a business concept was originated by Steven Haeckel as a way for business enterprises to be as responsive to threats and opportunities as a fighter pilot is using the Observe-Orient-Decide-Act (OODA) concepts of Col. John Boyd. To learn more about the different definitions and concepts of S&RL, see our Definitions Page.

The key to actually implementing a Sense and Respond System is to understand that it moves beyond responding to events and making decisions. There is just too much data and complexity today for such an approach to work, and decision making is only effective if decisions are followed up with actions and monitors the effects of the decision. So we include the concepts of “Interpreting” and “Acting”. And equally important we understand that the system can feedback on itself at various stages as the decision loop moves forward.

SIDA Loop

What makes a SIDA loops so powerful, and ultimately unmanageable without intelligent systems, is that they are in fact recursive loops inside of loops. But this is also true throughout the end-to-end S&RL process. This means that in effect, each stage of the decision loop is itself part of larger loops in a recursive process as illustrated below.

SIDA Enhanced

To achieve the vision of Sense & Respond Logistics you need to enable your enterprise through user-centric, collaborative, dynamic and adaptive decision support solutions. It must be built on a dynamic situational picture that provides actionable information to all the communities of interest through tools and visualization suited for each community. Therefore your enterprise must deliver live correlated information and real-time situational awareness to those whose actions can “affect the battle” (present and future). Because of our unique agent approach and expertise, we can provide the technology platform, training and expertise to solve your most difficult logistics challenges and help your organization understand and achieve the vision and benefits of Sense & Respond Logistics solutions.

CSI tools manage these loops so that decision makers can focus on making decision instead of searching for information or watching for events. As illustrated below, the CSI approach takes this even a level higher reflecting that the SIDA loops are in constant motion up and down the enterprise to keep communities of interest continually abreast of large and local situational pictures to support collaborative decision making and inform them of the effects of other decisions that are being made by others and by adversaries/competitors.
