Cognitive Grid Part 4:
The Cognitive Grid Technologies.
The Cognitive Grid Technologies are the integration, at all levels of the architecture, if Intellingent Agents, Grid Computing and the Semantic Web. Each of these technologies has qualities and capabilities they bring to the architecture, but when utilized in conjunction with the others provides a powerful development foundation for realizing the philosophy and methodology of the Cognitive Grid.
Intelligent Agents
Intelligent agents, the core of the Cognitive Grid and ActiveEdge, are software entities that operate continuously and autonomously in a particular environment. An agent’s responsibilities are defined by the behaviors that have been built into it, and agents carry out their activities in a flexible and intelligent manner that is responsive to changes in the environment. Agents can adjust behavior dynamically to fit the current situation, determining how their actions and behaviors should change as events change. Agent-based systems represent the next major advancement in network computing and leverage the strengths of object-oriented, peer-to-peer and service-oriented architectures while providing a process-centric design. The real value is that intelligent reasoning occurs at each level of the system to reduce overall system load and increase quality, control, and responsiveness.

Grid Computing
Grid Computing is the group of technologies around distributed computing, like SOA, SOAP and UDDI. Grid Computing is also about distributed resource management, coordination schemes and scalable techniques for messaging and collaboration. While most people know only the SOAP/SOA component, the power of discovery, resource management and distributed control make Grid Computing a must for distributed solutions.

The Semantic Web
The Semantic Web provides a powerful and extensible way of representing knowledge in a manner that computers can understand. Today, computers simply manipulate tokens and don’t have any means to understand the meaning of the token, thus not understanding a truck is a type of vehicle. Through the Semantic Web, and representations like OWL, computers can understand, translate, reason and ground concepts in meaningful ways.
